Sunglasses: a Fashionable Necessity

What would we do without sunglasses? From finishing off any outfit to protecting our eyes from the sun, it’s hard to imagine life without them. Here’s a look at how sunglasses rose to popularity, why they are now regarded as much more than just a fashionable accessory and what we have to offer at Cohen’s Fashion Optical.

History of Sunglasses

Can you believe there was once a time when the world didn’t have sunglasses? Well, it’s true, but that changed around the 12thcentury when they were believed to be introduced in China and Rome. At the time, sunglasses were made of quartz crystals to shield the eyes from the sun’s glare. They were also used by judges in ancient courts to keep their facial expressions disguised during interrogations.

After sunglasses debuted in Hollywood in the early 1900s, the earliest designers began to capitalize on their commercial appeal. At this point, a fashion staple was born. In 1929, Sam Foster sold the first Foster Grant sunglasses on a boardwalk in the booming shore town of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Later in 1936, the inaugural polarized lenses were made available, patented by Edwin H. Land. These mark the beginning of sunglasses being used to seriously protect eyes from the sun.

That’s when the demand for sunglasses truly took off. During World War II, Ray-Ban came out with its iconic aviator sunglasses, which used polarization to provide war pilots with a solution for the sun’s glare in the sky. In 1937, Ray-Ban made aviators available to the public. Other designers then joined in, and the rest, you could say, is history. And while those aviators were built for function, their classic styling was impossible to ignore. That’s why today you’re just as likely to see them on the beach or a city street as sported by pilots.

Vital Protection for Your Eyes

Beyond elevating your wardrobe and helping you stay on-trend, sunglasses have another very important function – protecting your eyes from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Prolonged UV exposure not only poses a risk for developing skin cancer, but it can also lead to several adverse consequences for your vision, such as a sunburned cornea, cataracts, and even certain cancers and loss of vision. And the summer season or sunny days aren’t the only time you’re at risk, as you can develop any of these issues in cloudy, rainy and even snowy weather.

That’s where sunglasses from Cohen’s Fashion Optical come into play. Whether you’re into round or square lenses or are looking for patterned or monochrome frames, every pair of sunglasses we offer provides reliable protection against the sun’s dangerous UVA and UVB radiation. We also offer polarized lenses to further reduce glare. For eyes sensitive to light, you can find extra-dark lenses as well. Not sure which type of lenses is best for your needs?
