What is an FSA?

A flexible spending account (FSA) is a unique bank account designed to help you cover medical expenses that aren’t already covered by your insurance plan. These accounts must be set up through an employer that offers FSAs, and each account has a limit that varies by year. One of the most notable benefits of the FSA is that the funds inside these accounts are untaxed – though they must usually be used within the year. Eye exams, eyeglasses and contact lenses are all among the many types of expenses for which FSAs may be used.

What is an HSA?

The health savings account (HSA) is fairly similar to the FSA. Like FSAs, HSAs allow you to store untaxed dollars for use in a medical context, and there’s a limit that changes from year to year. Rather than being offered through employers, however, these accounts are only offered to individuals and families using a high-deductible health plan (HDHP). They’re designed to help you pay for deductibles, copayments, coinsurance and other key expenses to help minimize your overall medical costs. This includes glasses, sunglasses, contact lenses, eye exams and other expenses you may run into while seeking eye care.
