Regular exams are fundamental

Regular eye exams should play an important role in preventative healthcare, even if you don’t believe your vision has changed. These exams help ensure that you’re receiving corrective measures that enhance your everyday life while enabling professionals to search for signs of eye-related conditions, from cataracts to glaucoma, that you may not be able to identify on your own. In some circumstances, your exam may even reveal issues that affect your health on a larger scale, including diabetes, hypertension and thyroid disease. Cohen’s Fashion Optical administers exams through highly trained, on-site optometrists, so you can rest assured that our doctors can identify and address these issues before they become more serious.

How to read your prescription

After you’ve received your exam at Cohen’s Fashion Optical, we’ll provide you with a prescription that details the current condition of your eyesight. These prescriptions can seem complex, but reading them is fairly simple.
First, you’ll see OS (oculus sinister; left eye) and OD (oculus dextrus; right eye) readings that detail the power of your vision in each eye. A plus sign before either of these numbers means you’re farsighted, while a minus sign indicates that you’re nearsighted. On your prescription, these numbers will typically be marked by “SPH” or “S,” both of which stand for “spherical.”
If you’re dealing with astigmatism, you’ll notice a few extra measurements – usually marked as “CYL” and “AXIS” – which refer to the degree and orientation of your astigmatism, respectively. Customers who require multifocal or progressive lenses will also see “ADD,” identifying the amount of power added to the body of a multifocal lens in order to address farsightedness.

Choosing the right corrective approach

With your prescription in hand and a wealth of options at your disposal, you’ll finally have the opportunity to select eyewear that suits your needs and preferences. Simply speak with our in-store opticians to explore your choices. Cohen’s Fashion Optical is proud to offer single-vision glasses, as well as classic multifocal options.
For a smooth, modern experience, progressive eyeglasses are also available. These popular, cutting-edge specialty lenses provide the versatile functionality of multifocal lenses while eliminating the lines that can sometimes diminish their appeal.
